NFL Week 3 - Best Bets By Billy Schick
Carolina Panthers vs Los Angeles Chargers (-6.5)
The Chargers are coming off of an impressive showing against the Chiefs. Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert threw for over 300 yards, and the L.A. defense proved that they are among the league’s best as they held Patrick Mahomes to only 211 yards passing. The Panthers, on the other hand, are off to a rough start. Teddy Bridewater is looking to bounce back after a dismal showing in Tampa, but will have to without MVP candidate running back Christian McCaffery, who was just placed on the IR with an ankle injury. With no McCaffery and a struggling defense, expect the Chargers to put up a lot of points and cover the spread.
Prediction: Chargers -6.5
Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons (-3)
The Chicago Bears are 2-0, but both of those wins have come against the Lions and Giants, who are likely heading towards the number one pick. Although Mitch Trubisky has shown signs of promise, he continues to throw bad interceptions, proving that he is still the same quarterback from a year ago. The Falcons are 0-2, and blew a 20 point lead to the Cowboys last week in which they failed to recover a game-sealing onside kick that set up a game winning field goal for Dallas. The good news for Atlanta is they scored 39 points last week, so their offense is really clicking. With a Bears defense that is nowhere near what it was two years ago combined with struggling quarterback play from Mitch Trubisky, the Falcons and their second-rated passing attack should be no match for Chicago. Take the Falcons to cover the spread and pick up their first win of the year.
Prediction: Falcons -3
Houston Texans at Pittsburgh Steelers (-4)
The NFL schedule makers showed no sympathy for the Texans this year, giving them contests with the Chiefs and Ravens to kick off their season. Yes, Baltimore and Kansas City are two juggernauts in the AFC this year, but that is not an excuse for how atrocious the Texans played in those two games. The passing offense has struggled behind the league’s worst offensive line, as through 2 weeks Deshaun Watson has already been sacked 8 times. The defense has also been horrendous, and giving up 396 rushing yards in their first two contests. The Steelers are 2-0, and have established themselves as a legit contender in the AFC. With the league’s best pash rush, the Steelers are going to have their way with the Texans offensive line all game long. Expect a dismal showing from the Houston offense, and a huge game from James Conner as the Steelers run all over the Texans and cover the spread.
Prediction: Steelers -4
Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints (-3)
After two impressive divisional wins, the Packers enter week 3 red-hot. Aaron Rodgers has proved that he still is among the league’s best at the quarterback position, putting up over 600 yards and 6 touchdowns in his first two games. With Rodgers, Davante Adams, and Aaron Jones clicking on all cylinders, the Packers offense may be unstoppable. They are facing a Saints team that is coming off an embarrassing loss to the Raiders. Without Michael Thomas, Drew Brees has struggled to throw the ball downfield. If Michael Thomas doesn’t play this week, Emmanuel Sanders will have to step up or else it will be a long day for Brees and company. Expect Aaron Rodgers to carve up the Saints defense as the Packers stay hot and get to 3-0.
Prediction: Packers +3
Kansas City Chiefs @ Baltimore Ravens (-3.5)
This is going to be a good one. Two teams who will likely square off in the AFC Championship this year get an early week 3 matchup. Mahomes vs Lamar on Monday Night Football. Does it get any better than this? This is a tough one to pick. The two teams are so equally matched, so I don’t think the Ravens -3.5 is an appropriate line. That being said, I see the game coming down to the final play and being decided by a field goal or less, so bet on the Chiefs.
Prediction: Chiefs +3.5
