Positives and Negatives to Signing Haskins By John Brecko

Dwayne Haskins was released by the Washington Football Team before the regular season came to an end. However, he has quickly found a new home in Pittsburgh, agreeing to terms that the Steelers laid out for him.

When you weight out the positives and negatives, this is actually a savvy move that has been made by the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. When you look at the off-the-field issues Haskins has had along with his level of play before being released, you may think otherwise. However, those issues took place less than a month ago. If you think this signing was a bad idea for Pittsburgh, it may be because you may be looking at this with recency bias.

In college, Dwayne Haskins threw for 50 touchdown passes in his first year as a starter. However, there are teams that actually had a problem with this. The problem teams had is that Haskins only had one year to prove himself.

If he had a second year as a starter, most fans would assume a player would be better when he has time to develop, but in most cases, scouts want someone who has proven themselves through a two to three year time span at least.

However, when you throw for 50 touchdown passes before you enter the NFL Draft, it would only make sense for someone to give you a chance.

Originally, we thought the team that would give Dwayne Haskins that chance would be the New York Giants. However, they would go on to pick Daniel Jones instead. This would be a move that would prove controversial to this day since Daniel Jones has been turnover prone in his first two years with the Giants, even if he did improve from year one to year two.

Dwayne Haskins would be picked by Washington instead and would struggle in his rookie year. However, his struggling in the NFL has not been entirely his fault. He began his career with head coach Jay Gruden, who was apathetic in the first few weeks of Washington’s 2019 season since the team was not playing well and he knew he would likely be fired for it.

Bill Calahan took over for the remainder of the 2019 season before Ron Rivera accepted a head coaching position with the team. However, Ron Rivera quickly benched Haskins in the 2020 season without taking the time to develop him. Ron Rivera refused to take responsibility for a player that he did not draft.

It was only after Alex Smith was injured when Dwayne Haskins partied with strippers without wearing a mask during a pandemic that he would end up being released. He did not play well in the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers and his release came after that performance.

Due to recent events, many forget when Dwayne Haskins’s performance on the field was improving during the 2019 season. Many forget the fact that he had been through three coaches in two years. This is a fact that no one forgets with someone like Baker Mayfield, who has also been through multiple coaches in his three years in the NFL.

Dwayne Haskins has gotten this second chance because of past accomplishments and how quickly he clearly adjusted to a starting role in college. If he gets developed properly, Pittsburgh is an organization he can excel in. There is stability as far as coaching with Mike Tomlin being the head coach of the Steelers for well over a decade.

This is a savvy move for the Steelers as well because they have the 24th pick in the first round of the draft. They also do not have a lot of money they can spend in the offseason. Dwayne Haskins is a great option as a deal for a low-risk, high reward scenario, especially with Ben Roethlisberger still coming back next season.

It would actually be good if Roethlisberger came back and mentored Dwayne Haskins. Haskins could learn a lot and become a much better quarterback because of it. Roethlisberger and Haskins also have similar builds and playing styles (both of them are big quarterbacks who can run when needed).

This move could be the best scenario for both parties, especially since the Steelers do have many veterans, but also players like Chase Claypool. If Haskins has chemistry with Claypool, the Steelers will still be a force to be reckoned with, especially if they draft well in 2021.

Dwayne Haskins may still be someone to watch out for in the National Football League. Even after his past controversy, it is still too early to count him out.
