Why Drew Brees Is Done Playing Football By John Brecko
Many believe that Drew Brees’s final NFL game was this past Sunday in the Divisional Round of the playoffs in the 2020 season.
Unfortunately, his final game did not end with a win. His team fell 30-20 when time expired to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, his season is not ending because of the loss in the playoffs. Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints made it to the NFC Championship game in 2017 and 2018 before getting knocked out of the playoffs in the Wild Card Round of the 2019 season just one year ago.
Drew Brees has suffered playoff losses before. When you look at the stats, you see that he threw three interceptions in that game. Therefore, you see that his performance in that game against the Bucs clearly was not his best. After this game, people in the media would say that he clearly cannot play at the level he needs to anymore. However, this is just another case of the public trying to find evidence that an old quarterback is “washed up”. No one was pointing out how old Drew Brees looked in the Wild Card Round one week earlier against the Chicago Bears where he threw for two touchdowns and no picks.
Drew Brees will decide to walk away after the 2020 NFL season, because of family.
After the game, a viral video was released where Tom Brady said goodbye to Drew Brees after the game had already concluded. Both men had even taken off their shoulder pads by the time this interaction had already taken place.
Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass to one of Brees’s sons in the back right corner of the end zone while in coverage. The person covering the right side of the field was Brees’s other son. Brees was seen playing with his young daughter at the time this was taking place. Tom Brady even told the boy who caught the touchdown pass that “We could’ve used you tonight!”
This seems like a veteran player ready to say goodbye. This seems like a veteran player who has devoted his life to the game of football and now wants to see what will come next out of life. This seems like a veteran player who wants to spend time with his wife and kids and watch them all grow as time passes.
There is an argument to be made that Drew Brees is not the player that he used to be, which would make sense since he turned 42 less than one week ago and just a couple says before his matchup against Tom Brady. However, it was revealed on social media by his wife, Brittany Bress that he was also playing with a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder, as well as a torn fascia in his foot. A shoulder injury was reported in weeks 8-10, but the extent of the injury was never revealed. The foot injury was never reported at all.
All that was reported about Drew Brees’s injuries was the 11 fractured ribs he suffered that kept in out for multiple weeks this season.
This could have amplified a desire to walk away from football, but the contract that Drew Brees has with NBC. He would get to be involved with a profession that does not involve fighting through injuries and still be involved with the game he loves to a certain capacity.
He gets to spend time with his family and spend time still involved with football. His life is set up once he retires. When you look at the contract, he is set to join the broadcast booth in 2022. It only makes sense to want to take a year off and recover from arguably the most brutal sport of any in existence.
Everything tell us that retirement is near. Thank you Drew Brees. Thank you for 80,000 passing yards. Thank you for the Super Bowl and countless contributions you gave to the city of New Orleans. Thank you for the countless memories you provided for NFL fans. No matter what decision you decide to make, thank you for everything you have done.
