Filmmaker, Adam McKay crushed it with his latest HBO hit, Winning Time, as goes in depth behind the Lakers dominance in the 1980's . However he has since explained how the success of the series has caused the separation with longtime friend, with Will Ferrell. In Vanity Fair interview, McKay gave his reason on his choice to select Ferrell's good friend John C. Reilly as Jerry Buss instead of him.
“The truth is, the way the show was always going to be done, it’s hyperrealistic, and Ferrell just doesn’t look like Jerry Buss and he’s not that vibe of a Jerry Buss. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. I wanted to be respectful. I should have called him and I didn’t. I fucked up on how I handled that. It’s the old thing of keep your side of the street clean. I should have just done everything by the book.” (via Vanity Fair)
McKay said Ferrell "accepted it as a way more profound hurt than I at any point envisioned" and the last time they talked was a "terse" telephone discussion. “I said, ‘Well, I mean, we’re splitting up the company’. And he basically was like, ‘Yeah, we are,’ and basically was like, ‘Have a good life.’ And I’m like, ‘Fuck, Ferrell’s never going to talk to me again.’ So it ended not well.” (via Vanity Fair)
McKay sent several emails to Ferrell but received no reply.
Ferrell, who has been seen at multiple Lakers games throughout the years, clearly wanted this role. Let's see how it effects his friendship with Reilly.
